What Is A Music Video



A music video can be defined as, A music video or song video is a short film integrating a song and imagery, produced for promotional or artistic purposes. Modern music videos are primarily made and used as a marketing device intended to promote the sale of music recordings. When music videos were first produced, they were created with the intention of music becoming more available through television. This opened up an entire new market allowing the likes of brands such as MTV to form. As music videos became more accessible for people to see directors and artists soon began to introduce the use of narratives into the music videos. The music video itself allows the artist to clarify a message or focus that the song itself has.



What Are The Three Types Of Music Videos?

Within the music video industry there are three main types of music videos, these are;
  • Narrative
  • Performance
  • Concept 


Narrative

A narrative music video is one that has a story line which is based upon the songs lyrics and genre. Having the visuals to go along with the music allows the artist to engage the viewer in a different way other than them just listening to the music. The storyline within a music video allows the viewers to follow the song throughout a good example of this would be Timberlands song 'If we ever meet again' the videos tells the story throughout engaging the viewers as they are drawn in and are excited as to what happens throughout.



Performance

A performance based music video is simply where within the music video, it consists of the band or artist performing to either a camera or an audience. this is commonly done from songs that are played at concerts. The high energy that is created from this increases the viewers adrenaline which makes them feel like they are more involved within the music video and part of the action, a good example of this is Oasis' famous 'Wonderwall'



                                        
                                     



Concept

Concept videos are based around a single idea or theme. These ideas or theme are often very unusual and different to your standard music video. The use of a conceptual music video is so unusual and different for the viewer that it actually attracts them into watching the whole clip itself. The aim of these types of music videos is to keep the audience entertained and unsure as to what is going to happen next within the video.









As well as the three main types of music videos there are three other types which would be seen as a type of sub-genres.
